A bedraggled, but determined, man is pumping coins into the Hotel Monaco's Giga-Millions slot machine, believing he will win. He then steps away & tourist, Jamie Smith, goads her boyfriend, Ted Sallenger, into taking the $40 million pull. Upgraded to the presidential suite, Sallenger then tells Jamie to get lost. The next thing we hear is a knock at the door & a call of "Room Service". Sallenger's body is now lying splattered on the pavement. Grissom is immediately suspicious having noticed Sallenger was still wearing his glasses at the time of his death. The fallout from the Holly Gribbs shooting rains down at the lab. Captain Brass is demoted back down to Homicide & Grissom is put in charge of the night shift. He then announces that he is bringing in a friend from San Francisco, to handle the internal investigation into Warrick's apparent misconduct. Doctor Jenna William's points out shards of black glass in Sallenger's forearms are indicators of defensive wounds. Grissom & Nick found a broken champange bottle at the hotel. Jamie is brought in for questioning and admits that she did cut Ted but that he left & didn't return. Her story however doesn't match the hotel's security log, & Grissom decides she has no financial motive for murder. On the Monaco's roof, Nick notices a gritty substance clinging to his pants. Grissom tells him "it's Myers Roof Dust, it's used to deflect the sun's rays. Keeps the heating bills down in the winter." Grissom then conducts "Operation Norman" named for three dummies, to determine whether Sallenger fell, jumped, or was pushed. Emerging from the crowd, Sara Sidle marvels at the old-fashioned technique. Grissom concludes, "This guy was pushed." Taken aback by Catherine's frosty welcome, Sara suggests they work Holly's case together. Sara asks where she might be able to find Warrick; Catherine directs her to one of his haunts on Blue Diamond Road. Grissom & Nick watch a videotape of the action around the time of Sallenger's big win & find that a guy named Red Carlton had been there for over eleven hours. Grissom finds Carlton back at the slots. Noticing roof dust stains on his pants, he has Carlton arrested for conspiracy to commit murder. Having placed Judge Cohen's bet on the wrong team, Warrick owes him $10,000 & has one hour to come up with it. Though he is winning at blackjack when Sara finds him, she tells him to stick & suggests they go for coffee & Sara asks where he was when Holly was shot. He tells her that on the night of Holly's shooting he went out for coffee unworried as there was an officer present. However Sara then informs him that "Holly Gribbs died on the operating table 20 minutes ago." Ballistics Tech Bobby Dawson tells Catherine that Holly was shot with her own gun. A lead emerges when a pager Catherine found at the scene rings. She manages to convince the owner that it would be worth it to meet her. Carlton admits to having had a few drinks with Sallenger, but didn't kill him. After a couple of hours of boozing, Carlton claims he went up to the roof alone planning to end it but then changed his mind. At the Three Aces Motel, Brass & LVPD uniforms burst in on Jerrod Cooper, who is the pager's owner. As he's put in cuffs, Catherine notices a nasty scratch on his cheek. She then goes to the morgue to collect samples from underneath Holly's fingernails. While Nick & Grissom find no roof dust on Sallenger's shoes, they do find fibers on the stem of his watch. Doctor Williams then shows Grissom a diamond-shaped contusion in Sallinger's skull; this is what killed him, then he was pushed. Nick returns to the suite and finds a brass candlestick with a large diamond shape on one side. He then applies Leuko Crystal Violet to the ground on the balcony, which reveals a large bloodstain along with prints of a hand & two knees. Jamie sits in interrogation while Grissom puts the pieces together. After leaving Carlton, Sallenger returned to the suite where Jamie hit him with the candle stick. She then dragged him toward the balcony, his watch collecting carpet fibers along the way, & heaved him over the edge. She's placed under arrest. Greg tells Catherine & Sara that Cooper's DNA matches the epithelials beneath Holly's nails. They struggled, Cooper grabbed her weapon & shot her. But Holly, finding his pager, managed to hide it beneath the couch, leaving CSI a clue. Warrick returns to the lab to talk to Grissom, who says he has to let him go for violating procedures. Warrick comes clean about his whereabouts. Realizing he just can't do it, Grissom lets Warrick keep his job. "I already lost one good person today," he says, "I don't want to lose another."
