A 12-year-old girl is abducted from her sister's car. According to her 18-year-old sister, April, twelve-year-old Alicia Perez was abducted at around three in the afternoon by a 30 to 40-year-old African-American male driving a beat up Buick with Nevada plates. Although she was ostensibly changing back into her school uniform in her sister's vehicle, the clothes she changed out of are missing.
Brass learns that Carlos and Sybill Perez kicked April out of the family home a year ago because she had continuous run-ins with the law, including time spent in juvenile detention for intention to distribute heroin.
On Alicia's computer Sidle finds that she has been visiting scientific sites about organ transplants. It turns out that Daniel Perez, 20, Alicia's brother, is dying of kidney failure. Alicia is his matching donor; without her, he will die. "I hate mom and dad" is written on the underside of her bed's top sheet.
On one of her notebooks, Alicia has written the name "Jimmy Jones" obsessively. Jones, 14, states that he and Perez had been followed by an African-American male who stared at Alicia. The description that Jones gives matches that of registered sex offender Marlon Waylord, 38, who lives in the Perez neighborhood. He drives a Buick, which he claims has broken down in the Tangiers parking lot.
Grissom comes across a long black hair on the inside of Waylord's jacket. Sidle finds semen on the sheets in his bedroom, and also discovers a pair of boy's underwear. There are pictures of children on his photo phone.
The hair on Waylord's coat is synthetic. The boy's underwear is stained with Waylord's semen, but there are no other epithelials indicating that they were never worn.
The body of Alicia Perez is discovered at the foot of Mt. Charleston. The body is wrapped tightly in a blue blanket. Willows notes that the girl's shirt has been rebuttoned incorrectly, suggesting that she was redressed. Her underwear is missing. Near the body Warrick finds shoeprints, size 13, with a lug sole.
There are no visible signs of sexual assault. Liver temperature is 90 degrees. There are no wounds of any sort, and lividity is fixed; she was found on her side, so she was moved well after death. There are two long, rectangular marks on her back. From x-rays, the CSIs see that Alicia has twelve round holes in her breast and hip bones, indicating that she donated bone marrow twice. Robbins finds that cause of death was cardiopulmonary arrest. Based on livor mortis and vitreous fluid, the time of death is set at 44 hours earlier, or between midnight and 8am on the day of her kidnapping. This means April Perez is lying about the abduction.
Daniel Perez suffers from relapsing acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL); Alicia was conceived in vitro to be a genetic match. The Perezes used Alicia's umbilicial cord stem cells, then, when she was 4, had her donate blood for Daniel's transfusion. At age 7, she underwent LEUKAPHERESIS. She donated bone marrow twice. She was scheduled to donate a kidney. One year ago, Daniel Perez was hospitalized for overdosing on opiates. This was around the same time that April Perez was forced out of the family home. The CSIs suspect that she tried to murder Daniel.
Alicia's tox report indicates the presence of Diazepam. Blood taken from Sybill Perez's t-shirt matches the blood of Alicia Perez found on the blanket in which her body was wrapped. The volume of blood suggests trauma, although there was nothing visible.
In April Perez's garbage Sanders finds a printout for the convenience store where the "abduction" took place and for Marlon Waylord's apartment. April Perez does not appear to own a computer. The Internet map company's records indicate that the printout came from Sybill Perez's home.
In the Perez home the CSIs come across a pair of size 13 work boots. Brown sees blue fibers clinging to the comforter in Daniel's room. Sidle finds prescriptions for Daniel and Alicia; he took oxycodone and she took diazepam. In one of the Perez vehicles the CSIs find a folded tripod, the legs of which look like the lividity marks on Alicia's back. The blood on a soaked handkerchief in Daniel's room belongs to Alicia, because she had recently given blood for his transfusion and the blood running in his veins was hers. Daniel Perez killed his sister Alicia out of a sense of mercy for the suffering she endured on his behalf and which he knew his parents would never put an end to. He gave her a milkshake laced with lethal doses of medication. He would not commit suicide because, a fervent Catholic, he considered that to be an unforgivable sin. His parents and surviving sister conspired to hide the body and implicate Marlon Waylord.
