The front desk clerk, early 20's, at the Four Aces Hotel welcomes flight attendant Martha Krell, late 30's, as she pulls her black "wheelie" luggage behind her. She's a regular and the clerk has her room ready for her.
Martha approaches her room and is grabbed from behind by a stranger, who pushes her through the door.
Later, Grissom and Sara meet up with Captain Brass, who stands next to the bed where Martha Krell lies, fetal position, wearing only her underwear. A pool of blood is drying around her mid-section.
The CSIs notice that the room is clean - no signs of a struggle, no clothes, no luggage, and even the bedspread has been pulled taut. There is the smell of bleach and deodorizers in the room.
David Phillips checks Martha's liver temperature and determines that she has been dead around ten hours. There are at least a dozen defensive wounds on her palms.
Greg Sanders hands Grissom a pocket knife with a Phillips screwdriver attachment. Grissom unscrews the drain cover and recovers a wad of hair, which they swab with phenolpthalein and find the presence of blood. The killer washed blood down the drain.
Sara tells Grissom that they can't find a single print in the hotel room. Usually they find too many but in this case everything has been wiped down thoroughly.
Brass interrogates the front desk clerk who tells him that he discovered the body when he entered her room. She wasn't answering her phone and her flight supervisor wanted to make sure she got the message. Since the clerk has a master key, he just went in.
Hayden Michaels, mid-40s, approaches Brass and introduces himself as the Manager of the Four Aces and volunteers his help. Hayden asks to keep the story out of the press, but Brass tells him that the press will do what they do.
Catherine and Nick approach a white picket fenced house in the Green Valley neighborhood and pass by Martin Hawkins, early 40's, and his wife Yvonne, late 30's. Matt Hawkins, 14, is escorted out of the house just as the CSIs arrive. Detective Cavaliere tells them that the victim is 12-year-old Ty Hawkins.
Ty Hawkins lies in bed, his head badly beaten in, blood splatter all over the bed, headboard, and walls. David Phillips determines time of death to be around midnight, based on the liver temperature. There is no sign of forced entry, nothing is missing and no weapon was found.
Catherine processes the bed, using two integra swabs to collect bloodstains from the headboard and wall. She then dusts the entire room. Inside the clothes washer, she finds clothing that fluoresces under her ALS.
Nick simultaneously works the outside of the house, finding shoe impressions in the dirt just outside Ty's window. He puts an 'L' scale next to the impression and snaps photos. Then he pours plaster into the imprint. Looking up, he discovers the word "BRAT" scrawled into the window glass. As he looks from the window, he spots a stack of old pipes.
Nick goes inside and tells Catherine that he found old pipes and one seems to be missing, indicating it could possibly be the murder weapon.
In the Autopsy Room, Dr. Robbins tells Grissom that Martha Krell was violently stabbed to death and the official cause of death is exsanguination. "She was raped. Contusions to the vaginal introitus and an eighth-inch hemorrhagic laceration at the vaginal forchett. Six o'clock position. The attack was brutal."
In the CSI Layout Room, Sara Sidle asks Conrad Ecklie what he needs. He tells her that five years ago there was a flight attendant named Sue Stein who was raped and murdered in a local hotel. The killer was never found.
Sara looks at the pictures of Sue Stein and finds that, like Martha Krell, she was found in a fetal position on a bed with multiple defensive wounds on her arms. The room was also immaculate, smelling of disinfectant, and her clothes and suitcase were missing.
In the Sue Stein case, the body was found in a first-floor room and the sliding glass door was unlocked. Martha Krell was killed in a second story room. They couldn't find a CODIS hit for the semen in the Sue Stein case but they did find a print. The fingerprint was impressed in Sue's blood but the "underlying pattern of the fabric made it impossible to read." Sara tells him that times have changed.
In the Interrogation Room, Martin Hawkins is being printed to separate his prints from others at the crime scene. Nick takes photos of Martin, who is clearly distressed, and then takes a swab of his mouth. Nick asks for his shoes as well.
Outside the room, Yvonne and Martin Hawkins see their son Matt through the glass wall. Detective Cavaliere tells them they cannot speak to him.
Nick asks Cavaliere why he let the parents go, and the detective responds that based on years of listening to parents of dead children, he knows that their grief is not an act.
Greg Sanders approaches Mia, who is busy working in the DNA lab with her headphones on. Greg guesses that she's listening to Jessica or Ashlee. She's listening to Jean-Paul Sartre's "Huis Clos" in French.
Mia tells Greg that blood found in the hairy wad from the drain is consistent with Martha Krell. The semen from Martha's SAE is consistent with the DNA from the prior attack on Sue Stein - they are looking for the same rapist. Mia shows him the sperm cells under a microscope. The rapist's immune system doesn't recognize its own sperm and antibodies are attacking it. This is a phenomenon consistent with a reverse vasectomy that they read about in a forensic journal.
In the Autopsy Room, Dr. Robbins wonders how Ty Hawkins could have made someone so mad to have killed him with blunt force trauma. Fourteen separate blows, a cylindrical weapon consistent with a pipe. There is a thread pattern in the victim's forehead that matches the end of the pipe found at the crime scene. There are no defense wounds present on the body.
In the Interrogation Room, Detective Cavaliere harshly questions Matt Hawkins as Nick looks on. Cavaliere tells the boy that he knows he took a pipe from the backyard, went into Ty's bedroom and beat his head to a pulp while he was sleeping. Ty looks to Nick for help and Nick asks Cavaliere to step outside to talk to him.
Outside the Interrogation Room, Nick tells Cavaliere that they don't have any evidence that Matt killed his brother and that he should stop intimidating the boy. Cavaliere tells Nick to go back to the lab and to get him some evidence.
In the Print Lab, Neil Derringer shows Sara Sidle how he can separate the background fabric from the print found on the Sue Stein case. The computer's pre-programmed algorithm erases every other color from the fabric except for the blood red and then they run the print through AFIS. They get a hit: Jesse Acheson, 38, multiple convictions for cocaine possession. He was out of prison on May 12, 1999, when Sue Stein was killed. He was also out the previous night when Martha Krell was killed.
Sandra Acheson, 30s, answers the door and Brass tells her they are looking for her husband, Jesse Acheson. She claims not have seen Jesse in days and slams the door on them.
Sara hangs around to watch and listen as Sandra talks on the phone with Jesse.
In the CSI Layout Room, Catherine examines Ty's bloody t-shirt and finds a brown hair. She looks at it under a microscope and finds that it is a match to one of Matt's hairs. Catherine then finds small blue fibers on the shirt.
Nick is in the Evidence Locker comparing pairs of shoes to the impression he collected outside of Ty Hawkins's bedroom. He finds a match: Matt Hawkins.
Nick tells Catherine that the hair and shoe impression could just be a "result of two brothers living together." Catherine tells him she has blue fibers and no one in the family was wearing blue.
In the AV Lab, Sara and Grissom look at plasma screen exhibiting a map, including the Tangiers Hotel. Sara tells Grissom that Sandra Acheson called Jesse at 3:03PM and Jesse's cell phone signal indicates that he was near Tower 8, phase West. Homicide checked hotels within the area and found that Jesse is booked at the Tangiers.
Greg Sanders enters and tells Grissom that the rapist's semen came back positive for cocaine. Grissom speculates that Jesse is selling coke to businessmen from his hotel room and then took a "break" from his job to rape and kill Martha.
At Police Headquarters, Cavaliere tells Nick that he got a confession out of Matt Hawkins. He used the computer voice stress analyzer and caught him lying. Nick tells him that device was discredited and is not used in Las Vegas.
Brass tells Grissom that the General Manager at the Tangiers refused to let him into Jesse Acheson's room without a search warrant. Grissom tells him he will talk to the judge.
In the CSI Locker Room, Warrick tells Nick that he heard that Matt Hawkins' confession is going to hold up in court. Nick tells him that there is some homeless person in the Hawkins neighborhood and he may be a possible suspect. Warrick volunteers to help.
Judge Witherspoon tells Grissom that she cannot invade Jesse Acheson's privacy because of a five-year-old print that was manipulated by a computer. Grissom protests that it wasn't manipulated but rather processed. She denies his request.
Outside a coffee house, Greg and Officer Akers, in plain clothes, observe Jesse Acheson as he sips coffee from a paper cup. After Jesse finishes he leaves his cup behind and Greg picks it up. If the DNA on the cup matches the seminal DNA, Grissom won't need to get the warrant.
Nick and Warrick are in the Hawkins Living Room, telling the parents that their son Matt is under investigation. Yvonne tells the CSIs he may need a change of clothes. Nick realizes that the clothes in the hamper were Matt's.
Yvonne tells them that the homeless guy scared the boys when he wrote the word "BRAT" on the window. Matt cleaned off the window, which explains why his shoe imprint was out there. The transient lives in a makeshift home in the park.
Officer Metcalf shouts at a homeless man as they drag him from his shelter. The dishevelled man answers that his name is Walter. He's wearing a blue sweater and there is blood splatter all over the front of it.
Mia process the DNA from the cup and finds that there are two contributions on the lip, which means "your coffee shop recycles - but not in the good way." Neither of the contributions is consistent with semen recovered from the crime scene.
In the Interrogation Room, Jesse Acheson claims he never killed anyone and has no idea how his print got in Sue Stein's room. The CSIs tell him they don't think he raped or killed the victim. Jesse admits that he went to see Sue that night and found her in a pool of blood. He wiped his hand on the bedspread and left. Since he had a record and was out on probation, he didn't report the murder. The reason the door was unlocked was because she was expecting him to deliver cocaine.
Nick and Cavaliere are in the Interrogation Room with Walter. Nick tells the homeless man that the sweater he was wearing had bloodstains from the murdered boy on it. Walter claims he found the sweater on a bench near the basketball court.
Cavaliere tells Nick that he has a signed confession and Nick has a "bum wearing a bloody sweater. What are you going to do about it?" In the Layout Room, Nick analyzes Walter's blue sweater and using the ALS, he finds an invisible dry cleaner stamp, "Yung's Cleaners, #555-99-A167."
At the Hawkins house, Martin Hawkins looks at a picture of the bloody blue sweater and tells Nick that it looks like his sweater. Nick tells him that the sweater has Ty's blood on it.
In Trace Lab, Hodges tells Grissom that he smelled the hairy wad that was found in the bath drain. It smelled a "bit woodsy" to him. Grissom is impressed that Hodges actually smelled the evidence. Hodges tells him that there is a cedar additive in the bleach.
In the Four Aces Hotel Manager's Office, Brass and Grissom question Hayden Michaels and Lucy, 30's, a housekeeper. Lucy explains that she started adding cedar chips to the bleach a few years ago in order to make it smell better.
Grissom notices family photos of Hayden with two teenagers, a boy and a girl, and another photo of him with a young wife and a baby. Grissom tells Hayden, "You had your vasectomy reversed for her." Hayden asks why he asks about his vasectomy. Grissom asks for his DNA sample but Hayden refuses, stating that it would be bad for his career in hospitality.
In the Interrogation Room, Hayden Michaels sits with his lawyer, Adam Matthews. Grissom explains his theory of the crime as he looks directly at Hayden. The killer is a psychopath, someone who has fantasized about the rape and murder for years. After making his first kill, Hayden was more excited than he anticipated and regretted that the victim died too quickly. What differentiates a psychopath from a "heat of the moment" killer is forethought.
Sara enters with a flight attendant's wheelie. Hayden realizes that Sara broke into his car. The lawyer claims that she just set his client free by breaking into his vehicle. Sara opens the bag to reveal a tape recorder that is recording. Sara explains that the airline issues this type of "wheelie" to all its flight attendants and since it was missing from the crime scene, there was the assumption the killer took it. Hayden is busted.
In the CSI Garage, Catherine has a dummy set up with a sponge head soaked in blood. Nick, Warrick, and a small Judy Tremont all wear white sweaters. Warrick is about the height of Martin Hawkins, Nick is about as tall as Walter, and Judy is close to Matt's size. They take turns whacking the sponge head with a pipe and getting blood spatter all over their bodies.
After comparing the white sweaters to the blue sweater they found, they realize that the sweater that most matches is Judy's. Ty is the one who bashed his brother's head in, and then he ditched his father's blue sweater that he was wearing in the park. In the Interrogation Room, Matt Hawkins admits his guilt but doesn't tell Cavaliere why he committed the crime. Martin Hawkins enters the room and asks his son why. Matt breaks down at the sight of his father and says, "He told. He told everyone." Martin Hawkins understands: "That you wet your bed." Matt screams out for him to shut up. Then he cries, apologizing.
Cavaliere tells Nick that he owes him an apology. Nick responds, "I'm sorry...you feel that way."
